Weekend Winners

This week’s stories are from SuperLucky readers who had success in tiebreaker comps last year. It’s great to have a few funny stories up your sleeve as you never know when a promoter might ask for them!

Nicola won a £200 voucher to spend on Lands End’s website with a story about her teacher…

“It wasn’t a massively high value prize but it was special because they wanted to hear stories about your favourite teachers on their blog and they selected mine as their favourite. I told them a story about my very much loved English teacher at high school who was quite a quiet and reserved man but one day came into class, swept everything off his desk onto the floor and did a tap dance before calmly climbing down again. Apparently this was because he was sick of asking his teenage daughter what had happened at school that day and being met with a shrug and a grunt and had decided to give us all something to tell our parents when we got home!”

Lisa won a dream holiday prize in ‘The Experts’, the Flight Centre magazine. I’m really looking forward to hearing how Lisa gets on, as Japan is my favourite place!

“In 2015 I decided to give creative comps a go and I am so glad I did! I ended up winning my most amazing prize yet, a 2 week personalised trip to anywhere in the world. I chose Japan as it has always been my top dream destination to visit but is somewhere I never thought I would be able to go. I had to submit my idea of what would make a brilliant 2 week journey. I wrote what my partner referred to as a dissertation on what I would love to see and do, just writing down my dream trip. The deadline for drawing a winner passed on a Monday so I stopped thinking about it and then on the Friday I got the WEM and promptly burst into tears. We are now in the process of clarifying the itinerary and booking everything ready to go in October!”

Have you noticed more radio stations are asking for tiebreaker answers now? Rachel won a wonderful prize with Capital FM.

“I was lucky enough to win £3000 in a Capital FM competition promoting the film American Ultra where you had to write about a time you were a superhero in 200 characters. I bashed out a few lines about the time I rescued a stranded fledgling bird from traffic. I forgot all about it, as I assumed plenty of entrants would have much more epic stories than mine, so I was gobsmacked to get the call, especially as I then had to go live on air to accept it. I think a large part of my luck was down to scrupulously checking the character limit and keeping the tone light and funny – I finished with a joke along the lines of “my husband said the bird would poo on me but thankfully it didn’t”…it seems everyone loves a poo joke!”

‘Think of a name’ competitions are fun, and it pays to have a relevant story behind the name too. Christine did just that!

“I won a jacket worth £300 from Helly Hanson by naming it.  I called it the ‘Cordelia’ who is a Welsh goddess with the motto ‘go outside’.”

Melissa experienced the drama of cheating when she entered a competition to come up with a new name for a YouTuber…

“One of my favourite wins was a Nintendo 3DS XL from a YouTuber called InfamousHD, who hosted a competition for a name change. The person who had the best name would win a Nintendo 3DS in a color of their choice and a copy of Super Smash Brothers. There weren’t many entries so my boyfriend and I decided to enter it. We left name suggestions every day until the livestream on Twitch when the winner would be chosen. We came in second place – with ‘Venomous Infamous’ – and were supposed to win a copy of Super Smash Bros. We were pleased with what we’d won until we discovered that the person who came in first had made several YouTube accounts to shift the votes in his favour! When Infamous complained about this, the first place winner threatened to report him to YouTube for hosting an unfair competition! Infamous quickly awarded the prize to this cheater but sent us our own 3DS and copy of the game because he felt that we were the real winners in that competition!”

Thanks to all the winners who contributed stories this week. See you next time!
