My #CurrysMovieNight favourite soundtrack
Currys PC World are running a great bloggers competition which I shared in my Take 5: bloggers competitions round up last month. To enter, you need to publish a post about your favourite movie soundtrack, song or score before midnight on 12th October 2014. Two winners will get a fabulous BOSE Cinemate 15 Sound Bar and BOSE Solo 15 Soundstage.
My favourite movie soundtrack is from a magical movie, Harold and Maude. I saw this film for the first time in 1989 and fell in love with it. It’s the tale of an odd romance between a young boy (Harold) who’s obsessed with death. He hangs out at stranger’s funerals and hooks up with a delightful old lady (Maude) who loves to do the same. It sounds crazy, and when it was released in 1971 nobody quite understood it. But it’s romantic, tragic, uplifting, funny and decades later established itself as a cult classic. There’s an excellent essay at www.criterion.com if you want to read more!
The soundtrack is entirely performed by Cat Stevens, and remarkably was only released on vinyl in 2007, when a limited run of 2500 copies was snapped up by eager fans straight away (you can find a few on eBay for upwards of £300). I managed to create my own version by collating songs together from CDs and iTunes, but you can find a Harold and Maude soundtrack playlist on Spotify:
‘If you want to sing out, sing out’ is the standout track, written especially for the movie. Maude sings it at the piano, and at the end Harold plays it on the banjo (even as I think about that scene I have tears in my eyes!). Harold and Maude is a unique, crazy movie with a perfect soundtrack – and I love it! If you’re intrigued, please consider tracking it down to watch – you won’t regret it.
“You know love is better than a song. Love is where all of us belong. So don’t be shy, just let your feelings roll on by.”
