Prize-stacking in London
Sometimes winning a prize isn’t quite as exciting as you’d hoped, particularly if it involves travel expenses to use it! Tickets to a football match, an overnight stay in a London Hotel, a £50 bar tab in a cocktail bar… all these prizes can cost you money to use. But use your competition wins together by prize-stacking (you might call it prize combining or prize pooling!) and you could end up with a jam-packed day – or weekend – of fun!
Last summer I won a stay in London on Magic FM, and we finally got it booked for last weekend. The prize included travel for the three of us from Brighton to London, transfers from the station, and a night’s accommodation in a studio room at the Park Plaza County Hall. In addition we were given £100 of restaurant vouchers and a £90 Odeon gift card. As with many radio competitions, this was a great package to start with!
One of my favourite things to do as a comper is to combine prizes where I can to ensure a free – or cheap! – day out, or holiday. In December I won a £50 gift card to spend in Tunbridge Wells, so immediately started searching for ‘Win Tunbridge Wells’ on Twitter and Google – the following week I won a family ice skating ticket, so we were able to combine both prizes in one visit. When I won an overnight stay and tickets to London Fashion Week, I also used a £50 bar tab I won on Twitter, and a free meal from a Facebook win.
Back in November I won tickets to see Goya – The Portraits at the National Gallery so after arriving in London we decided to walk to Trafalgar Square from our hotel (fighting our way through the selfie sticks in front of Big Ben!).

To my surprise, Ryland really enjoyed the exhibition – it’s not my kind of art, but was wonderful to see up close and the portraits of children were particularly fascinating. Ry spent half an hour running after sticky bubbles afterwards…. look at the state of those boots!

Back at the hotel, Ry was delighted to find he had his own double bed and TV, so the teddies immediately felt comfy. Fancy being able to watch Sunday morning Match of the Day on two tellys… living the dream!

Last spring I won family Premium Merlin Passes with Specsavers, so we took the opportunity to visit the London Eye, Shrek’s Adventure and the Sea Life Centre for free – all conveniently located near the hotel at County Hall.

It was my first time on the London Eye at night and it was great – reminiscent of Tokyo with lights as far as the eye could see.

We spent our restaurant voucher at Yo! Sushi – Ryland’s favourite restaurant – and later used a £50 prize Costa card (from a Tate & Lyle Facebook competition) for coffee and cake.

We were so busy we didn’t have time to spend our cinema voucher, which I’ll save to use in Brighton. I also have a prize family ticket to the Florence Nightingale Museum to save for our next London visit.
Tips on prize-stacking
If you win a night or weekend away, don’t take it too quickly – book it for a few months away so you can search for free meals., vouchers or entertainment tickets you can use at the same time. Use my Google search tips and check Twitter for the location key words – check local listings websites, shopping centres, magazines and radio websites for prizes too. Prize stacking is probably easiest in London because of the number of different places to visit!
You could also look out for prize swaps from other compers – often people can’t use tickets or meals and are looking to swap them or give away for free! Join a Facebook swaps group (try Friendly Compers Swap Group or your local Facebook comping group, although you’ll have to wait for approval from the admin team) in case there’s anything suitable for your trip.
Have you managed to combine prizes for a free day out or weekend? Let me know in the comments!

My kind of weekend Di! Going back to 2009 we had a weekend in London (courtesy of Heart Radio, hotel break, dinner at Ketners in Soho with tickets for Wicked plus spending money) on the Monday before I entered a competition on Red Dragon radio called carioke, identified the song being played and was placed in the final on Friday. The final arrived while in London and to win the competition you had to sing the lyrics correctly and for the longest time….the grand prize a brand new Mini One! I was able to hold a tune (badly) to JLS Everybody in Love for the longest time and won the car! It was already a great free weekend but turned into a fantastic weekend. The car was delivered a few weeks later from Park Lane in London and is still in the Chapman family today…great weekend!
Hi Di! In my 2nd week of comping I won a theatre trip to London- even stayed in the same hotel as you! The week before we were due to go, I also found out that I had won some tickets to and exhibition at the Tate Modern, so it turned out to be an awesome weekend!
You are so efficient with your prize combining! I tend to use a prize in conjunction with another trip i need to take to that place e.g. if we have a blogger event in london in the morning, we’ll combine up with a prize afternoon tea so that the travel is more worthwhile but most the time I am not organised enough to specifically plan to combine prizes. I know that there have been plenty of times that its ended up costing a lot to take a prize (e.g in travel and other expenses) but at the end of the day it’s given us opportunities and fun times that we otherwise may not have done so i don’t mind too much if i’m not mega efficient. Looks like you’ve had a great time. We’ve never done the London Eye at night so that should be on my wish list I reckon! x
I really want to win Shard View tickets that give you two trips – day and night. Would LOVE that! Good luck for 2016 Rebecca! x
Great idea not to book it too quickly! And thanks for the links to the FB groups, don’t tend to go in for comps where I wouldn’t use the prize, but sometimes you can end up with a runner-up prize that you weren’t expecting (Tena lady pads anyone?!)
Some great suggestions. I’ve usually not bothered entering hotel stay comps, due to considering the expense of getting there, but now I can see they could be worth entering
Just got back from an overnight stay I won on Twitter- at a Marriott hotel only 10 miles from home- but what a treat for the kids! Dinner and breakfast were Included, and we spent time in the hotel pool, before collecting 12 free Krispy Kremes from the nearby KK cafe (from another Twitter win) to bring home with us!
How fantastic – you didn’t even need to spend money on travel! 😀
This has inspired me not to dismiss overnight stays, etc. as long as they have enough time in the prize to search for a combination! Thanks for the tips!!
Yes I won a dinner, bed and breakfast in a Handpicked Hotel last year, thanks to Gressingham Duck website, we booked to stay in Harrogate. The night before, we decided to use our Hilton Honors points, booked a free night at the Hilton Hotel in Leeds. Spent the day shopping before travelling to Harrogate and coffee was free at Cafe Nero as I’d won a free voucher as a runner up on a Facebook comp!!
I always do this to make it as cheap/free as possible, like you say. I win the odd hotel stay for 1 night here and there, but my partner often moans that the prize isn’t really worthwhile if you have to pay for travel expenses to get there etc, so I try and find other wins which would make up for it (i.e. meals, activities etc) so yes we may still have to pay for travel (that’s always such a hard one to find a prize for!) but everything else is free 🙂
I’d love to see more prizes of rail travel/railcards/vouchers – there have been a few for Oyster card credit lately too which would be handy. And petrol vouchers!
I always do #EssoThursdays on FB in the hope of winning fuel vouchers!! 😉
Great post 🙂 I hadn’t thought of googling for prizes in the vicinity of where I’m off too but will in future – great tip!!! Recently won tickets to X Factor live and put them together with 1st class rail travel to make a lovely couple of days. We also did a trip to London with various vouchers I had won and had a hotel and dinner with red letter days, orient express trip with ‘buy a gift’ and a Thames Cruise with red letter days. I agree, worth putting them all together! Thanks for fab blog post, your hubby and son must be so used to you getting things organised! 😉
