Unboxing my prizes on my YouTube channel is fun, but I don’t appreciate the packaging waste! I get lots of exciting deliveries, but am disappointed by the amount of non-recyclable materials used. From cardboard boxes overflowing with bubble wrap to branded merch in plastic bags, brands could definitely do better when it comes to recyclable packaging.

The Macfarlane Unboxing Survey is designed to get an idea of the type of packaging people receive in the post when they make online purchases, and how efficient and environmentally friendly it is. In previous years the survey has revealed that people want to receive their purchases in packaging that’s easy to open, easy to return and kind to the environment – so ideally it should be fully recyclable. I’ve noticed a lot of retailers have switched from plastic bags and padded envelopes to cardboard or paper packaging lately.

What are the prizes?

This year as it’s the ninth annual Unboxing Survey, there are nine great prizes up for grabs! Winners will be selected at random from everyone who completes the survey.

How to enter the prize draw

In order to enter the prize draw, you will need to choose one recent parcel you have received, take a photo of the packaging and then complete the survey questions about the parcel and its packaging.

Note that items from marketplace or auction sites (eBay, eBuyer, TikTok shop, etc.) or Amazon are not valid – and competition prizes are only valid if they’ve been sent directly from a retailer, rather than a fulfilment or marketing agency. So for example, if you won a prize that the promoter ordered to be delivered directly from John Lewis, that would be a valid item.

  • Complete the Unboxing Survey here – you will need details of what you bought, where you bought it from, and details of how it was packaged
  • At the end of the survey, upload a photo of the packaging
  • Add your name and email address, and submit!

Make sure you get your entry in by 19 August 2024 – you can enter more than once, completing a new survey for each package you receive (each parcel must be from a different retailer). Each new survey and photo completed is another entry into the prize draw. Winners will be notified by 30 September 2024.

The prize draw is open to all UK residents aged 18 and above.

Below is a parcel I received recently which I will use for Macfarlane’s survey – a football presentation box ordered from Puffin Plastics. The box was wrapped with bubble wrap and sellotape, then packaged with brown paper in a branded cardboard box – the bubble wrap isn’t recyclable, but the box had to be protected from damage so I can understand why it was used (and hopefully the recipient of this prize will re-use it!)
