Raising for Rainbows 2010!
On Sunday 17 October my friends and I organised our third East Midlands comping day to raise money for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. Our first event, held at Pride Park in 2007, raised £3237, and last year’s in Mickleover raised £3560. We were determined to raise even more this time, so the girls had been busy for months rounding up fabulous raffle prizes from our generous sponsors – we had a Dyson, a Warner Hotels break, a Nintendo Wii, DeLonghi coffee machines, perfumes, handbags, beauty hampers, spa days and literally hundreds of other prizes. Marie had spent weeks making the amazing hampers of goodies, we couldn’t even fit any of them on the prize table!
As two of our usual seven-strong team had (rather cheekily!) gone on holiday, we had to recruit help from London Competitors Club, Accolade Publishing and Compers News regulars to make sure all the goodie bags and prizes were ready for the 140 compers arriving at 9.30am. As the compere, I needed a meticulously detailed timetable of the day’s events (which I lost several times) and luckily most of the day ran according to plan. We had quizzes, spot prizes, random draws, bingo (featuring the infamous bingo handbag and tiny balls) and of course, the giant charity raffle. The hotel let us down with their weedy lunch but we hopefully made up for that with some huge slabs of chocolate cake for pudding! And talking of puddings, Matthew Walker kindly donated 250 Christmas puds, so all the guests went home with one.
After Paula from Rainbows had drawn the hundreds of winning raffle tickets, we revealed the amount that had been raised for the Hospice – a whopping £3800!
To end the day, our friend Fairby had organised a fantastic finale for us featuring loads of balloons being released and popped – five lucky ticket winners then had to come to the front of the room and pop their octopus balloons as fast as they could – it was certainly a sight to behold… Vicky was our champion and walked away with a giant Christmas Hamper, bottle of champagne and Good Food Show tickets, and the 4 runners up all got a Christmas tree.
Thankyou to our fabulous sponsors, everyone who helped us out on the day and to all the attendees for being so generous and supporting such a worthwhile cause. As we watched people struggling to carry their prizes and goodies out of the hotel, we concluded it had been a great success… but boy, was I ready to get home and put my feet up!
