The McVitie’s Great Biscuit Break Bonanza: is it worth entering?

McVitie’s Great Biscuit Break Bonanza is being widely promoted on packs and in supermarkets – but don’t be fooled by the on-pack advertising claiming there’s £1million of prizes to be won!

Like the recent Mini Cheddars promotion, the Great Biscuit Break Bonanza is a disappointing ‘algorithmic’ instant win promotion, with most of the advertised prizes not guaranteed to be won. I would recommend you only buy biscuits if you would usually buy them – don’t go out of your way to buy just to enter the competition! The promotion runs from 15 April 2024 until 19 June 2024.

Ten £2,500 prizes are guaranteed to be won

Again, like Mini Cheddars, McVitie’s have ensured they have a winners list by guaranteeing that ten top prizes of £2,500 cash will be won. Each prize has been assigned a random time (a ‘winning moment’) between 15 April and 19 June 2024 – if you’re the first person to enter your details after that winning moment, you’ll win £2,500.

8,505,350 prizes are NOT guaranteed to be won

The rest of the prizes in the McVitie’s promotion are not guaranteed to be won, they are only available to be won via an instant win algorithm. All these prizes will ONLY be awarded if the code from every single promotional pack is entered online – generally, for a unique code promotion like this, only around 3% of buyers will enter. For this promotion you also need to upload a photo of your packet, which will cut down on entry numbers as many people will consider this too much effort. And it’s restricted to just two entries a week, which seems rather mean!

Here’s the prizes:

  • 100 x Beach Break for 2 people
  • 250 x 2-night break in a 4-star hotel
  • 1,000 x spa break for 2
  • 1,000 x £200 Molly Maid house clean gift voucher
  • 3,000 x £100 Deliveroo vouchers
  • 8,500,000 x McVitie’s Coupon max value £1.90/€2.65.

For UK winners, the coupon is actually supplied as a £1.90 digital gift card for your choice of supermarket. For ROI it will be a printable €2.65 coupon.

How to enter the Great Biscuit Break Bonanza

  • Purchase a promotional flashed pack of McVities biscuits (or cakes) – McVitie’s have confirmed it’s OK if you bought your pack before the launch date of 15 April 2024.
  • Keep hold of your original itemised till receipt for each entry as they may be required to claim a prize if you’re a winner.
  • Enter the ‘Best Before’ date and the barcode at (or scan the QR on pack).
  • Upload a photo of the back of your packet showing both the barcode and best before date.
  • You’ll find out instantly if you’ve won a prize.
  • Winners will receive a text message with a link to follow to claim their prize.
  • You can only enter twice a week – each week starts on a Monday.

What if I buy my biscuits too late for the instant win?

Enter between 20 June 2024 and 17 July 2024 and you will be entered into a late entry prize draw to win a Beach Break for 2 people.

What are the chances of winning an instant prize?

Without knowing the number of promotional packs in the shops, it’s hard for us to work out the odds of winning a prize, but they aren’t good. Only a handful of members of my Lucky Learners Facebook group have reported a win so far – and they have all won a £1.90 digital gift cards, no real prizes at all! Even if you are an instant winner, the chance of it being a ‘proper’ prize rather than a £1.90 coupon is very poor.

Going on previous statistics for this type of promotion, we can expect that less than 200 of the 5,350 ‘proper’ prizes are likely to be won.

The ten £2,500 prizes are guaranteed to be won though – over a 66 day promotion, there should be a winning moment roughly every week. In a competition with multiple winning moments per day I would recommend entering overnight for the best chance of a win, but with only 10 moments spread over 10 weeks I don’t think your choice of entry time will increase your chance of a win this time! If you’d like to know more about this, read my post What is a winning moment promotion?

Who is eligible to enter?

The ‘Great Biscuit Break Bonanza’ promotion is open to UK and ROI residents aged 18+ , you can enter twice a week and each household can win a maximum of one prize (a household can win multiple coupons).

Personally, I’m disappointed with the poor administration of this McVitie’s promotion and I don’t think it’s worth the effort of entering. The misleading on-pack advertising suggests £1million of prizes will be won, and there’s no mention of the promotion start date or the late entry draw dates on the packaging (which are essential T&Cs). With 8.5 million coupon prizes I simply can’t understand why we’re not hearing of more winners! Some brands who run this type of algorithmic instant win will state the odds of winning in the T&Cs (by telling us how big the flashed ‘pack universe’ is), but McVitie’s are certainly not interested in being honest with their customers. It’s a real let down after 2023’s excellent BGT promotions!

Won a 1.90 digital coupon, then won another a few days later. When I went to redeem them, it said the second one had already been redeemed. From T&Cs multiple Tier 7 prizes can be won (digital coupon). Has anyone been able to redeem more than one?
